Finding my favorite 'superstar' was a good first step to creating my own opinions and personality inside the realm of wrestling as a whole. Connecting to someone in the ring would help me better understand what I was watching. Whether it be a man fighting for honor or a woman just wanting to break some arms, understanding the means to an action and having a story to pay attention to really helps connect the viewer to the wrestlers. Makes me care about them. Like other sports, following a specific athlete can give an insight to my own personality and connect me to other people around the world.
When I started getting really into the content available, I got a feeling for the type of wrestler that appealed to me personally. There is no one specific thing I look for when watching a match or listening to a promo because that would then make me incredibly bias to what I'm viewing. Instead, I like to just sit back and try to enjoy everything going on in front of me. It helps keep me unbiased and I can then start to focus more on what the wrestlers are doing, their delivery or passion, without criticizing them as soon as their entrance music hits.
In the vast world of professional wrestling, the way a character is portrayed can be put into two simple categories, face and heel. A heel is a character who is, in essence, the bad guy or villain of a plot or feud. The face is the valiant hero or common Joe character that the fans can support and relate to in the real world. I don't really have a preference as long as the portrayal is good enough to spark my interest.
The one question always asked when someone finds out I'm a wrestling fan is, "Whose your favorite wrestler?". I start to respond with one or two people but then it snowballs until I end up with 50 favorite wrestlers and no clear answer to the question. If I were to list all fifty then you would probably be able to notice that these superstars don't really have a common theme because I like different people for different reasons. I don't even stick to a specific promotion since each one brings a new aspect to an already used idea, possibly making it better then the original. That said I do enjoy an original gimmick more then a common Joe, like mentioned before.
Long story longer, I don't have a favorite wrestler, I have favorite wrestlers. So after reading all that and not getting a clear answer, you can step away knowing a little bit more about me, which is the purpose of these anyways is it not? And hopefully, some day, I can put together a definitive list of my top 10, or 50, superstars so this blog actually goes somewhere.
